Project Overview: A commercial shipping company was facing operational inefficiencies due to outdated data management systems and safety concerns on their vessels. The lack of real-time data analytics and safety protocols posed risks to both crew and cargo. Our team was engaged to implement the Aegis Ring solution, aimed at optimising operations and enhancing safety measures across their fleet.

Challenges: During our initial assessment of the fleet, we identified several critical challenges. Many vessels relied on outdated operational processes and legacy systems, which hindered productivity and increased operational costs. Additionally, the absence of advanced monitoring systems compromised crew safety, raising concerns about potential incidents onboard. Furthermore, the vast amount of data generated by the onboard systems was underutilised, leading to missed opportunities for optimisation and efficiency gains.

To address these issues, we recommended implementing the Aegis Ring solution, which provides real-time data analytics and integrated safety features.

Solution: Our team conducted a comprehensive implementation of the Aegis Ring across the fleet, taking several key steps to ensure success. First, we performed an assessment and customisation of the Aegis Ring solution to meet the specific needs of each vessel, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems. Next, we provided detailed training and onboarding for crew members, equipping them with the knowledge needed to effectively utilise the features of the Aegis Ring. Following this, we carried out the integration and installation of the Aegis Ring on each vessel, enabling real-time monitoring of operational processes and safety protocols.

After installation, we configured the system to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and deliver actionable insights to the crew.

Outcome: The implementation of the Aegis Ring was completed successfully, resulting in impressive outcomes. The vessels experienced a 25% reduction in operational downtime due to improved processes and automation, significantly enhancing operational efficiency. Additionally, the proactive monitoring capabilities of the Aegis Ring led to a substantial decrease in safety incidents, ensuring a safer working environment for crew members. Improved data utilisation further contributed to this success, as access to real-time data allowed for informed decision-making, optimising routes and reducing fuel consumption by 15%.

Overall, the successful deployment of the Aegis Ring not only enhanced operational efficiency but also strengthened safety measures across the fleet, highlighting the importance of leveraging innovative technology to address industry challenges and set the stage for future success.

Project Overview: A compressor motor was experiencing excessive shaft voltages, with over 40V passing through the bearings, posing a risk of bearing damage due to Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). Our team was called to the site to diagnose the issue and perform corrective measures, including bearing replacement and the installation of an AEGIS Self Grounding Ring (SGR).

Challenges: During the initial inspection and testing of the compressor motor, we detected significant shaft voltages exceeding 40V, which can lead to electrical arcing and damage to the motor’s bearings. High shaft voltages create conditions for Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), a process where electrical sparks erode the metal in the bearings.

To mitigate further damage, we recommended the following interventions: Fitting an insulated bearing to the Non-Drive End (NDE) and Installing an AEGIS Self-Grounding Ring (SGR) to the Drive End (DE) to safely discharge stray voltages.

Solution: Our team mobilised to the site, using the Lift & Shift team to dismantle the motor and replace its bearings. The old bearings were removed, and a new insulated bearing was installed at the Non-Drive End (NDE) to prevent electrical arcing. An AEGIS Self-Grounding Ring (SGR) was fitted to the Drive End (DE) with an earth braid to ground stray shaft currents. After reassembly, the motor was tested, showing a drop in shaft voltage from over 40V to under 2V, ensuring safe operation.

Outcome: The onsite works were completed successfully, addressing the excessive shaft voltage issue. The use of insulated bearings and the AEGIS SGR effectively mitigated the electrical discharge risk, protecting the motor’s bearings from further EDM damage. Upon inspection of the removed bearings, visible signs of EDM were confirmed, validating the need for the intervention.
